Betfair Exchange Mobile App
Designing a high-speed mobile trading experience
A mobile product case study focused on turning a complex, fast-moving exchange environment into a clearer and more usable trading experience.
Selected project evidence
The work behind the outcome.
Research, journeys, prototypes and delivered outputs selected to show how the project moved from evidence to decision and delivery.

Successive market, betslip and sports-market wireframes show how the core mobile flows were refined over multiple design iterations.

The desktop exchange environment provided the reference point for deciding what information and control had to survive on mobile.

Research compared different user types, levels of market understanding and behaviours to identify where the mobile experience needed to reduce friction.

Journey models helped distinguish how analytical, automation-led and recreational users moved through finding markets, placing bets and reviewing outcomes.
The opportunity
A mobile product case study focused on turning a complex, fast-moving exchange environment into a clearer and more usable trading experience.
My contribution
I led product discovery, interaction design and prototyping, helping translate dense trading information into a mobile experience that supported speed, confidence and control.
Context and challenge
Exchange betting gives customers a more dynamic and information-rich experience than a traditional fixed-odds product, but that also makes the interaction model more demanding. Customers need to understand markets, prices, movement and actions quickly, often in time-sensitive situations.
The challenge was to create a mobile experience that felt powerful without becoming visually dense or cognitively heavy.
My role
- Led product and interaction design for the mobile experience.
- Worked with product and technology teams to define priority use cases.
- Mapped mobile tasks, information hierarchy and decision flows.
- Designed and iterated key screens and trading interactions.
- Used prototyping to validate speed, clarity and usability.
Strategic and product design response
Design for speed and confidence
The experience was shaped around moments of fast decision-making. Layout, hierarchy and interaction patterns focused on helping people read the state of a market and act with confidence.
Reduce friction without oversimplifying
The product needed to remain powerful, so the design work focused on reducing unnecessary complexity rather than flattening the product itself.
Optimise for mobile context
Information-dense product experiences behave differently on a phone. The design balanced glanceability, task flow and progressive disclosure so customers could move quickly while still understanding what they were doing.
Outcome and impact
- A clearer, faster mobile trading experience.
- Improved information hierarchy across key market screens.
- More confident customer actions through clearer interaction design.
- A stronger product foundation for future mobile evolution.
Why it matters
This work reflects a core strength I bring into later service and strategic design work: the ability to turn complex, high-consequence product behaviour into something people can understand and use quickly.
